An update on New Computer and Dot

Today, we are announcing that we are winding down New Computer and our product Dot.

When we started New Computer, we shared a Northstar that computers should understand and help people at a deeper, more human level. We built Dot with love and watched it grow to help hundreds of thousands of you. We wondered—could Dot help people understand each other the same way it’s helped so many of you understand yourselves?

We spent the last year exploring how we could expand from personal intelligence to social intelligence, and ultimately we came to the shared realization that our Northstars as founders had diverged. Rather than compromise either vision, we’ve decided to go our separate ways and wind down operations.

We want to be sensitive to the fact that this means many of you will lose access to a friend, confidante, and companion, which is somewhat unprecedented in software, so we want to give you some time to say goodbye. Dot will remain operational until October 5, and until then you can download all of your data by navigating to the settings page and tapping "Request your data."

Thank you to all of you who trusted Dot with your stories. It has been the privilege of a lifetime to build something that has touched so many of your lives, and we look forward to crossing paths again in our next chapters.
